Atrial Flutter

What Is It?

An abnormally rapid, well organised contraction of the atria typically at a rate of 300 beats per minute.

Additional Information

An Atrial Flutter usually involves a rapid heart rate, in which the upper heart chambers (atria) contract, or ‘pump’ in an abnormal manner. Underlying causes of atrial flutter include dysfunction of the sinus node (the natural pacemaker of the heart) and a number of heart and lung disorders. It can occur in a normal heart. Atrial Flutter can be controlled with treatment otherwise it tends to become a long term condition.

Treatment Options

Treatment varies dependent upon your own situation and should be discussed with your doctor who may recommend taking medication, catheter ablation or the implantation of a pacemaker.
